Article Title

THE NUCLEAR SHELL MODEL USING A SQUARE WELL

Abstract

We become more familiar with nuclear physics and nuclear energy levels through the work of Sophie Heinrich and Jean-Luc Sida [1]. In their work, the authors make use of the square well general formulas to obtain nuclear energy levels. In more detail, they solve the standard mathematical formulas using the Bessel functions within the well and the Hankel functions outside of the well to obtain the condition (see Additional Files below) , which is then solved numerically using Mathematica [2]. We reproduce that work, albeit with the use of the versatile MATLAB [3]. It is our experience that students are more familiar with this computational platform and this work may be complementarily useful for nuclear physics classes. The above eigenenergy condition and other associated formulas along with the resulting nuclear energy levels will be analyzed and presented.
