BOB POWELL, A PHYSICIST, RECOGNIZING 50-YEAR OF SERVICE TO GEORGIA ACADEMY OF SCIENCE
Abstract
Bob Powell joined the Academy during the annual meeting at Shorter College in Rome, GA in 1968 that was his first year at West Georgia College. He has served the academy in numerous capacities during his 50 years of membership. In early years, he was elected as the Section IV Secretary, then Chairman and the local committee member of the meeting held in 1971 at West Georgia College. He became the acting President in 1976 and then became the President in 1977. He led the complete revision of the Constitution and By-laws. And was commended for service above and beyond the call of duty. He has held various positions such as a member of editorial board, a member of the council, Chairman of the nominating committee, past President, a member of legislative liaison committee, technical program chairman, academy improvement committee and a historian during his 50 years of service. Bob became Chairman or co-Chairman of the local organizing committee when West Georgia hosted the annual meeting during years 1985 and 1997. Dr. Powell served as the President of the academy three times during 1977, 1987, and 2011 and was elected Fellow in 1979. The achievement of a 50-year service of Dr. Bob Powell is recognized and honored during annual meeting held 2018 at the University of West Georgia.
