PRE-GENERAL CHEMISTRY AND ITS EFFECT ON STUDENT SUCCESS IN GENERAL CHEMISTRY**
Student success in general chemistry is compared before and after the addition of a Pre-General Chemistry course at Valdosta State University. The effect on the DFW (grades of D and F and Withdrawals) rate is measured. In addition, the number of students changing majors following the pre-general chemistry course, particularly to non-science majors, is also examined. The overall DFW rate in general chemistry has dropped since the introduction of the Pre-General Chemistry course and students who have taken the course have a lower DFW rate than the general population of general chemistry students. The teaching methods used are discussed. These include the use of embedded peer tutors and a collaborative learning recitation.
