Empowering Experiential Learning: The EXACT Scholars Program and Its Impact on Critical Thinking and Career Readiness
Abstract
The EXACT (Experiential Learning and Critical Thinking) Scholars Student Recognition Program celebrates students who actively engage in experiential learning opportunities such as internships, research, service learning, co-curricular activities, and other hands-on experiences. By honoring these students, the program acknowledges their initiative and growth while inspiring others to take ownership of their educational journey. It reinforces the principle that learning extends beyond the classroom and occurs in diverse contexts. At the professional (senior) level, students develop an ePortfolio that demonstrates their ability to integrate experiential learning with critical thinking. Requirements include reflections for at least four courses with experiential components, completion of five Mastering Career Readiness modules, and a comprehensive reflection on how these experiences and skillsets support career goals. Comprehensive reflections are assessed using a five-dimension rubric addressing: (1) cross-disciplinary connections, (2) transfer of knowledge, (3) procedural integration, (4) conceptual integration, and (5) self-assessment. In the inaugural semester, 12 students completed the professional EXACT Scholars ePortfolio, representing nine Integrative Studies majors, one Information Technology major, and one Business Administration major. Through this program, students demonstrate their ability to connect theory and practice, adapt knowledge across contexts, and articulate personal growth. The EXACT Scholars Program exemplifies our commitment to fostering integrative learning and critical thinking, empowering students to transform experiential opportunities into meaningful career readiness and lifelong success.
