SIGNIFICANCE OF "SIX-DIRECTIONS/SIDES" IN STEM AND ART: A HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE**
Abstract
The number six is the first perfect number and the terms "six directions" and "six sides" have special meaning in STEM fields such as engineering graphics and also in Persian poetry and literature. Methods of "Perspective" and then "Orthographic Projections" were formally developed in Europe as scientific techniques in technical drawing during and after the Renaissance, however, in Iranian mysticism, there has been special emphasis in six geographic directions sometimes expressed with directions of existence" in the mystical view. As far as the review of literature shows, no one has yet directly linked the “six mystical directions in Persian Sufi and mystical poetry such as those used by Hafez and Rumi with the “six views in engineering orthographic visualization” and other areas of STEM for the sake of an artistic and historical discussion. The objective of this paper is to present the idea in a conceptual form that there are interesting similarities in these fields and to discuss about other applications of six-sided polygon as well as the number six in our daily lives.
