MASTER COURSE TEMPLATE IMPLEMENTATION EFFECT OF DFW RATES AND STUDENT SUCCESS IN ONLINE INTRODUCTORY ASTRONOMY **

Abstract

A study of grade distributions including DFW's after implementing a Master Online Course template (MOC) in an introductory astronomy course shows improvements for the PI's sections but not others. Generally, online sections regardless of MOC have higher DFW rates than face-to-face sections stemming from withdrawals. Course assessment averages are similar for persisting online and face-to-face students. Use of the MOC at the university sister campus shows lower DFW's and higher course grades similar to face-to-face. Studying both campuses and teaching modes shows no significant MOC-related improvement of DFW's and learning success. Possible reasons and potential solutions will be discussed.
