SYSTEMATIC ORGANIC SYNTHESIS OF A LIBRARY OF SALEN LIGAND DERIVATIVES
Abstract
SALEN type ligands have been widely synthesized for use in catalysis, though a simple, standard protocol for a wide range of derivatives could not be identified. Therefore, this research focused on establishing a simple protocol using salicylaldehyde, and it’s derivatives of 3,5-dichlorosalicylaldehyde, 4-(diethylamino) salicylaldehyde, 5-chlorosalicylaldehyde, 5-nitrosalicylaldehyde, 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde and coupling them with ethylenediamine and o-phenylenediamine. Products were tested for purity using TLC and melting temperatures and analyzed using an infrared spectrometer. Though some yields were lower or unrecoverable, many products produced over 80% yield.
