DESIGN OF A 3-D HELMHOLTZ COIL TO ANNIHILATE GEOMAGNETIC FIELD
Abstract
The geomagnetic field is a magnetic field at the strength of 0.25 - 0.65 Gauss surrounding the Earth surface due to the movement of molten iron in the Earth's outer core. Since the moving charges can be affected by this magnetic field due to the Lorentz force, collisions of charged particles in a plasma beam ruin the spectral resolution with an increased collision line width. To avoid this, a cubic shaped 3-D Helmholtz coil cage was built to annihilate the Earth's magnetic field. The design is based on Biot-Savart law. In this project, the 22 AWG vitreous enameled copper wires were used to wrapped the Helmoltz coils.
